Health, insurance and safety
During your PhD
PhD candidates must ensure that they have appropriate healthcare coverage and comply with UNICAM requirements concerning insurance, health and safety training and, where applicable, health surveillance.
Healthcare in Italy
Make sure you have valid healthcare coverage
The appropriate form of healthcare coverage depends on citizenship, residence status and the reason for staying in Italy. International PhD candidates should check which arrangement applies to them before or immediately after arrival.
ITALIAN HEALTH SERVICE
SSN coverage
People entitled to registration with the Italian National Health Service – Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) can access healthcare according to the conditions applying to their individual status.
EU / EEA / SWITZERLAND
Check your existing coverage
Depending on the type and duration of stay, healthcare may be provided through European healthcare arrangements, registration with the Italian SSN or another suitable form of health coverage.
NON-EU PHD CANDIDATES
Healthcare and residence status
Valid healthcare coverage is particularly important for residence-permit procedures. Depending on the individual situation, this may involve registration with the SSN or another healthcare insurance arrangement valid in Italy.
University insurance
Accident and civil-liability coverage
Coverage for PhD activities
UNICAM PhD candidates benefit from insurance coverage for accidents and civil liability for the duration of the PhD, according to the conditions of the University insurance policies and the applicable INAIL coverage.
Coverage applies according to the conditions and limits established by the relevant policies. Activities outside the ordinary UNICAM setting, including research periods at external institutions or abroad, should therefore be properly authorised and documented.

Workplace health and safety
Mandatory safety training
PhD candidates must complete the general and specific health-and-safety training required for the activities and facilities in which they work.
GENERAL TRAINING
General safety training is normally completed online through the UNICAM e-learning environment and provides the common foundation required before specific training.
SPECIFIC TRAINING
The duration and delivery method of specific training depend on the risk level and type of activity. Laboratory, veterinary, animal-facility and other higher-risk activities may require additional or in-person training.
Working at another institution?
Safety training completed outside UNICAM
PhD candidates whose research activity is carried out at another institution may be required to complete the specific safety training provided by that institution.
Certificates already obtained at another institution should be submitted to
formazione.sicurezza@unicam.it
for the appropriate checks.
Research mobility
Before leaving for another institution
Before starting a research period abroad or at another institution, make sure that the activity has been properly authorised and that healthcare, insurance and safety requirements for the host institution and destination country have been checked.
