Mobility abroad
DURING YOUR PHD
Plan and manage your research period abroad, complete the required academic and administrative procedures and access the services available during international mobility.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE
A research period abroad involves connected but separate procedures
First agree the destination, dates and research activities with your Supervisor and PhD Programme Coordinator. Before travelling, complete the applicable UNICAM mission procedure and check any additional requirements connected with your PhD programme, scholarship or funding source.
If you receive a PhD scholarship and are eligible for mobility support, the scholarship-increase procedure must be completed separately. Completing the scholarship-increase request does not replace the mission procedure.

02
PhD scholarship increase abroad
PhD candidates receiving a scholarship may be entitled to an increase for authorised research or training periods abroad, according to the rules and funding conditions applying to their position.
The procedure must be started before departure. The documentation normally includes:
• host invitation on institutional headed paper, with location, dates and planned activities;
• scholarship-increase request completed and signed by the PhD Programme Coordinator;
• Supervisor's declaration confirming the scientific relevance of the activity;
• travel registration required by the applicable procedure.

Eligibility, duration and financial arrangements may vary according to the PhD cycle, funding source, call for applications or specific agreement. Some funded positions may provide a different or equivalent form of mobility support.
03
Certification of the period abroad
The host institution must certify the period and activities actually completed abroad when required for the scholarship-increase procedure or by the funding conditions applying to the mobility.
The certification must be issued on institutional headed paper and signed by the responsible person at the host organisation. It should indicate the PhD candidate's name, the precise start and end dates and the activities actually carried out.
Monthly or final certification?
Certifications may be submitted monthly, allowing the scholarship increase to be processed progressively when documentation is received in time, or as a single final certification at the end of the stay. In the latter case, payment is processed after verification of the completed period.
05
International dimension and co-supervision
International research experience is an integral component of the doctoral pathway. Check the mobility requirements applying to your PhD programme and position and plan the period abroad as part of your individual research and training programme.
The international-dimension section also provides information on joint supervision agreements, institutional partnerships and research periods carried out at partner institutions.
06
Insurance, safety and healthcare
Before starting a research period abroad, verify the insurance coverage connected with the authorised PhD activity and the healthcare, safety and health-surveillance requirements applying to the destination and host institution.
For non-EU destinations, pay particular attention to healthcare coverage and the insurance information required by the Missions Portal. The host institution may also require specific safety training or occupational-health documentation before access to laboratories or other facilities.

Compulsory PhD mobility: no additional generic SAS departure form
For the standard compulsory mobility procedure described on these pages, the requirements are completed through the applicable academic, mission and, where relevant, scholarship-increase procedures. A mission lasting more than 30 days does not require the additional express authorisation provided by the Missions Regulations when it corresponds to compulsory mobility established by the PhD programme. Specific projects, funding schemes or mobility programmes may nevertheless require additional documentation.
