01 · DOCTORAL EDUCATION
What is a PhD?
A PhD is the third and highest cycle of university education. It provides advanced knowledge, research methods and professional skills through an original research project developed under expert supervision.
02 · THE SCHOOL
The School of Advanced Studies
The UNICAM School of Advanced Studies coordinates doctoral education, promotes its international dimension and organises common training activities for PhD candidates from different disciplines.
03 · PHD PROGRAMMES
PhD Programmes and curricula
Each PhD Programme covers one or more scientific areas and may be divided into curricula. Curricula identify more specific research and training fields within the broader doctoral Programme.
04 · STRUCTURE
Duration and full-time commitment
UNICAM PhD Programmes normally require a full-time commitment over several academic years. The exact duration, starting date and any conditions linked to a specific funded position are stated in the relevant Call for Applications.
05 · RESEARCH
Research project and supervision
The core of the PhD is an original research project. Each candidate is supported by a Supervisor and, where applicable, one or more co-supervisors, who guide the scientific work and the development of the individual doctoral pathway.
06 · RESEARCH & TRAINING
Research and training activities
The standard UNICAM doctoral Programme corresponds to 180 ECTS credits. It combines research activity, annual progress evaluation, courses and seminars related to the Programme and curriculum, and common activities designed to develop transversal skills.
07 · TRANSVERSAL SKILLS
Transferable and interdisciplinary skills
Common doctoral activities complement specialist training with skills useful in academic and non-academic careers, including scientific communication, research ethics, project management, Open Science, innovation and career development.
08 · INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION
International research environment
Doctoral candidates develop their research within international networks and may undertake training or research periods at universities, laboratories, research centres or other qualified host organisations outside UNICAM.
09 · THE FINAL MILESTONE
Language, thesis and doctoral degree
English is central to doctoral education at UNICAM. The Programme concludes with an original doctoral thesis, evaluated by external experts and publicly defended before a final examination committee.
